- 1st Shift: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- 2nd Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- 3rd Shift: 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM
Job Summary
The Material Handler / Overhead Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient handling, movement, storage, and distribution of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished products throughout the manufacturing facility. This position plays a critical role in supporting production by ensuring materials are delivered accurately and on time while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
This role requires extensive experience operating overhead bridge cranes to safely transport large steel components and materials weighing up to 60,000 pounds. Candidates must demonstrate a strong understanding of crane operations, rigging techniques, load control, and safe material handling practices in a heavy manufacturing environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Safely operate overhead bridge cranes to move steel, raw materials, and finished products weighing up to 60,000 lbs.
- Inspect cranes, lifting devices, slings, chains, and rigging equipment before each shift to ensure safe operation.
- Properly rig, lift, transport, and position oversized and heavy materials while maintaining load stability.
- Load and unload trucks, trailers, production equipment, and storage racks using overhead cranes and other material handling equipment.
- Supply production departments with the materials needed to maintain production schedules.
- Transport materials between departments while minimizing damage and maintaining efficiency.
- Accurately stage, organize, and store inventory in designated warehouse locations.
- Maintain inventory accuracy by recording material movements and completing required documentation.
- Perform routine housekeeping to keep work areas clean, organized, and safe.
- Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety policies regarding crane operation and material handling.
- Communicate effectively with production personnel, supervisors, and other crane operators to ensure safe movement of materials.
- Assist with cycle counts, inventory control, and other warehouse duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating overhead bridge cranes in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience moving large steel components and loads up to 60,000 lbs.
- Strong knowledge of rigging practices, load balancing, lifting devices, and crane safety procedures.
- Experience operating forklifts is preferred.
- Ability to read work orders, material tags, and shipping documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift, push, pull, and move materials as required.
- Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Frequently bend, stoop, reach, and climb as needed.
- Work safely around heavy equipment, moving machinery, and suspended loads.
- Ability to work in varying warehouse and manufacturing conditions.
