Welder/Fabricator – I / II / III (Combined Role)
Location: Manitowoc, WI
Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Production Supervisor
Summary
This role is responsible for fabricating and welding steel structures and components in accordance with customer specifications, WPS requirements, and internal work instructions. The position encompasses all skill levels from foundation-level welders to advanced welders capable of fitting, mentoring, and contributing to project insights. Individuals may be assigned responsibilities aligned to their demonstrated skill level (I, II, or III).
Key Responsibilities
General Welding & Fabrication (All Levels)
- Fabricate and weld steel components to print using applicable WPS and instructions.
- Perform GMAW welding in flat and horizontal positions; perform flux core welding as required.
- Clean weld joints and visually inspect for proper depth, cleanliness, and conformance.
- Perform self-inspections prior to quality review.
- Measure layouts, read and follow blueprints, weld maps, and weld symbols (expertise increases by level).
- Fit parts within specification, ensuring correct alignment and orientation marks.
- Operate overhead cranes and follow proper rigging procedures (after certification).
- Perform basic equipment maintenance such as changing wire, liners, tips, and consumables.
- Record job and labor information in time matrix systems.
- Follow all EHS policies and engage in behavioral-based safety initiatives.
- Support and participate in continuous improvement activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Intermediate & Advanced Responsibilities (Level II & III)
- Use blueprints, tape measures, and math skills to ensure accurate fitting and alignment.
- Weld using flat, horizontal, vertical flux core processes as required.
- Air arc gouging (Level II & III).
- Complete required operator sign-off documentation.
Advanced Responsibilities (Level III)
- Advanced fitting from blueprints with minimal supervision.
- Read and interpret weld symbols at a high level of proficiency.
- Provide technical input for estimating processes including labor and process requirements.
- Support team leaders with updates on project status, process issues, and improvements.
- Participate in customer or prospective customer visits.
- Mentor and train Level I and Level II welders; may monitor or sign off on testing where applicable.
- Communicate weld requirements clearly across teams.
Qualifications
Baseline Requirements (All Levels)
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to pass Jaeger J2 vision test.
- Ability to pass applicable weld qualification tests.
- Ability to read and follow all weld instructions and weld within parameters.
- Ability to safely operate overhead cranes (certification required, may be completed after hire).
Welder/Fabricator I Criteria
Welder I - 2025
- 6 months of welding experience or completion of a welding training program.
- Basic fabrication, measurement, and GMAW flat/horizontal welding.
- Entry-level blueprint exposure and simple weldment assembly.
Welder/Fabricator II Criteria
Welder II - 2025
- 1 year of welding experience or completion of training program.
- Ability to weld with up to 1/16" wire and perform flux core in flat, horizontal, and vertical.
- Proficient blueprint usage, part fitting, and inspection.
- Ability to use air arc process.
Welder/Fabricator III Criteria
Welder III - 2025
- Completion of welder training/certification or company certification.
- 2+ years welding experience, including heavy fabrication.
- Strong welding theory knowledge and advanced fitting skills.
- Ability to weld with up to 3/32" wire.
- Thorough blueprint, weld map, and symbol interpretation.
- Experience mentoring or training other welders.
